𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗞𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗽𝗼 𝗝𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗻𝗽𝗼 was one of the greatest Dzogchen masters in recent times, and was said to be the joint emanation of Jetsun Senge Wangshuk, Jigme Lingpa and Migyur Namkhe Dorje. He was commonly considered to be an incarnation of the primordial Buddha Samantrabhadra.
Born in 1899, Khenpo Jigme Yonten Gonpo studied with many great masters including HE Fifth Dzogchen Rinpoche Tupten Choki Dorje, Great Khenpo of Jagong Shenpen Nangwa, Shadral Kunga Palden, and many more. He received teachings on sutra, tantra and the general sciences, but most importantly Khenpo received all the empowerments, guidance and personal instructions of the Heart Essence of the Great Perfection and became the most important realised lineage holder of his day.
From the throne of Shirasing Buddhist College, he taught extensively on the sutras and tantras and in the latter part of his life became full time tutor to Sixth Dzogchen Rinpoche Jigdral Jangchup Dorje. Through his brilliant personal instructions of the Great Perfection, many of his fortunate students from all over the land became spiritually mature and attained liberation.
During the great upheaval that swept through Tibet, he passed into peace leaving no physical remains, only a few months after the Sixth Dzogchen Rinpoche had died.

𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗻𝗽𝗼 𝗧𝘂𝗹𝗸𝘂 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗲, the undisputed and direct reincarnation of Khenchen Jigme Yonten Gonpo aka Khenpo Gonri, the esteemed 26th abbot of Dzongchen Shri Singha University in Kham, Tibet, was born on the 10th day of the eighth month in the 1976 Bhutanese calendar.
He emerged into this world as the son of Chophel, from the serene village of Rabty, and Cheten, from Memung in Tongzhang Gewog, Tashiyangtse Dzongkhag in eastern Bhutan.
From an early age, His Eminence was gently guided in the basics of Buddhist texts by his grandparents, Tsampa Kunzang and grandmother Bumpa, at Chokpala under Trichu Goenpa.
Even as a child of merely three years, he exhibited remarkable signs of his spiritual nature. Anecdotes tell of how, while sitting on his grandfather’s lap, he effortlessly memorised entire Buddhist scriptures simply by listening to the chants. With a playful spirit, he would then recite these sacred texts while frolicking outside the hermitage, a testament to his extraordinary capabilities from such a tender age.

The recognition of His Eminence Gonpo Tulku Rinpoche’s true identity was a momentous and extraordinary event. In his autobiography The Seed of Devotion, Lama Gyelwang Nyima Rinpoche recounts a significant dream in which he saw his root guru, Khenchen Jigme Yonten Gonpo, standing before his bedroom door, his eyes piercing through the darkness. The vision was so vivid it roused Lama Gyelwang Nyima from his deep slumber. Rising from his bed, the Lama switched on the light, only to find nothing there. This unsettling experience kept him awake for the rest of the night.
The following morning, deep in contemplation about the dream, Lama Gyelwang Nyima, while sipping tea and gazing out of his window, noticed a red dog and a child accompanied by the astrologer Kunzangla walking through the courtyard of Changgangkha Monastery. Although the red dog soon disappeared, the child, escorted by Kunzangla, arrived at Lama’s residence seeking blessings.
The child, suffering from a bout of diarrhoea, required a cleansing ritual (“Thrusel”). When Lama discovered the child’s name was “Gonpo,” he recalled the details of his dream and began to suspect that this child might indeed be the reincarnation of Khenchen Jigme Yonten Gonpo.
Seeking confirmation, Lama Gyelwang Nyima consulted His Holiness the 4th Dodrupchen Rinpoche, who affirmed that the child was indeed the true reincarnation of Khenchen Jigme Yonten Gonpo. The child was thus given the name Jigme Pawo Drodul, and Lama Gyelwang Nyima was requested to compose a long-life prayer for the young Tulku.
The formal enthronement took place at Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Memorial Stupa in Thimphu, presided over by His Holiness the 4th Dodrupchen Rinpoche. At the age of six, following this significant event, His Eminence Gonpo Tulku Rinpoche was taken to Deorali Chorten Gonpa in Sikkim, India, at the request of Lama Gyelwang Nyima.
