HE Venerable Lhalung Sungtrul Rinpoche Leader of the Peling Tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism. Ven. Lhalung Sungtrul Rinpoche is the 11th in a direct line of incarnations of the great Bhutanese Tertön (treasure revealer) Pema Lingpa.
Rinpoche was born in 1965 in the Chumi Valley of Bhutan. His father was the governor of Zhemgang district. Sungtrul Rinpoche was recognized as the 11th incarnation of Pema Lingpa by H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and H.H. The 16th Karmapa in early 1969.
At four years of age he was brought to live with the monks of Tharpaling Monastery. Here he studied under the Kathog Rinpoche during the winter. During the summer months he lived and studied at Tamshing Monastery under Lopen Tseten and Tenzin Nyima.
At the age of 10, together with Namkha Ningpo, he traveled throughout Bhutan and Nepal under the tutelage of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. From 1983 to 1985 he studied in Rumtek followed by five years of studies in Mysore. After his studies he performed the traditional 3 year, 3 month, 3 day , 3 hour meditation retreat at Gangtey, Bhutan.

Sungtrul Rinpoche currently resides at Dramitse Monastery in Eastern Bhutan which he has painstakingly restored over the last 8 years. Tamshing Monastery in Bhutan and Lhalung Monastery in Tibet are also official seats of Rinpoche.Sungtrul Rinpoche is the spiritual and temporal leader of Tamshing. His mission includes care and maintenance of a monk body of over 250, stewardship of several of the most historic monasteries and temples in Bhutan, as well as overseeing Könchogsum College at Tamshing, a new shedra which was established in 2008.
